LEXAN Solar Control IR Polycarbonate Sheet

Every glazed roof or skylight faces the same trade-off: let in natural light, and you let in heat. Manage heat with coatings, and you sacrifice clarity and long-term durability.

LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet resolves this trade-off at the material level. A proprietary resin additive built into the polymer selectively blocks near-infrared radiation, the part of sunlight that causes heat buildup, while maintaining high visible light transmission. The result is a naturally lit, thermally controlled interior without the cost of solar-treated glass or the fragility of surface coatings.

What Is LEXAN™ Solar Control Sheet?

LEXAN™ Solar Control Sheet is a transparent polycarbonate glazing material engineered to reduce solar heat gain without sacrificing natural light.

Standard polycarbonate and glass allow both visible light and near-infrared radiation to pass through. Near-infrared radiation is invisible but accounts for a significant portion of solar heat entering a building. In glazed roofs, skylights, and conservatories, this creates rapid interior heat buildup that increases cooling loads and energy costs.

Previous solar-control glazing used screen-printed coatings or co-extruded layers on the sheet surface to block infrared. These made the material translucent or opaque, forcing architects to choose between light and heat control. They could not have both without moving to expensive solar-controlled glass.

LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet changes this. Polyvantis uses a proprietary resin additive built into the polycarbonate polymer itself to selectively separate near-infrared wavelengths from visible light. The additive technology is not a coating. It is inherent to the material, which means solar control properties are permanent, unaffected by scratching, weathering, handling, or on-site cutting.

LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet Performance Features

Permanent Solar Control: Built Into the Polymer, Not Coated On

The fundamental advantage of LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet is that its heat-management properties are not surface treatments. They are part of the polycarbonate resin. A proprietary additive selectively absorbs near-infrared radiation across the wavelength range responsible for solar heat gain, while allowing visible light to pass through with minimal reduction. Because the additive is inherent to the material, solar control performance does not degrade over time, cannot be scratched off, and is not affected by on-site cutting or cold forming.

Up to 40% Energy Savings in Cooled Environments

Polyvantis conducted model-scale energy consumption studies at the Welch Technology Center in India. The studies measured annual cooling and heating energy required to maintain interior temperature between 20 and 27 degrees C across several glazing materials. LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet showed the lowest total energy consumption of all materials tested, including standard glass and solar-control treated glass. Projected savings of 25% to 40% compared to standard polycarbonate glazing are achievable in temperature-controlled buildings. Actual savings vary with building design, climate, and HVAC system, and Polyvantis provides a calculation tool for project-specific estimates.

High Light Transmission with Controlled Solar Gain

LEXAN™ Solar Control IR solid sheet achieves a light transmission of 61% alongside a solar transmission of only 51%, giving a Light to Solar Gain Ratio (LSGR) of 1.21. For reference, standard 3mm clear LEXAN solid sheet has an LSGR of 1.02, and standard 3mm glass has an LSGR of 1.06. A higher LSGR means more useful light enters the space relative to heat, which is precisely what solar-control glazing should deliver. Low-E glass, the premium glass alternative, achieves an LSGR of 1.35, showing that LEXAN™ Solar Control IR sheet is competitive with high-specification glass at a significantly lower cost and weight.

UV Protection on Both Sides

Unlike many polycarbonate sheets that carry UV protection on one side only, LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet is UV-protected on both surfaces. This eliminates the installation risk of fitting the sheet the wrong way around, which causes UV-related degradation of the unprotected surface. For contractors working on large glazing projects, dual-sided protection reduces material waste and simplifies installation workflow.

High Impact Resistance

LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet retains the inherent toughness of LEXAN™ polycarbonate. It is virtually unbreakable under impact from hail, debris, and accidental contact, making it suitable for architectural, industrial, and transport glazing where glass breakage is a safety or operational risk.

Cold Formable and Thermoformable

Both the solid and multiwall variants can be cold-formed and thermoformed using conventional methods without losing impact or weathering properties. This gives architects and fabricators full design freedom for curved glazing, roof domes, and complex installations without requiring specialist processing equipment.

Where Is LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet Used?

LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet is specified wherever natural daylighting and interior heat management are both design requirements:

  • Roof Domes and Skylights: Highest heat-gain elements in any building. Solar Control IR reduces heat input without compromising the natural light that makes skylights valuable.
  • Conservatories and Glazed Enclosures: Keeps interior temperatures comfortable through Indian summers without heavy shading that blocks daylight.
  • Covered Walkways and Atria: Provides weather protection and natural light while preventing the greenhouse effect common in standard glazed walkways.
  • Glazed Facades and Canopies: South and west-facing glazing in India generates intense afternoon heat loads. Solar Control IR delivers transparency without thermal penalty.
  • Transport Glazing: Used in trains, buses, and specialty vehicles where solar heat gain affects passenger comfort and HVAC energy consumption. Cold-forming capability fits standard vehicle profiles.
  • Industrial and Agricultural Rooflights: The multiwall variant combines solar control with thermal insulation, reducing cooling loads in summer and heating costs in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet block heat without reducing light?

A proprietary resin additive built into the polycarbonate polymer selectively absorbs near-infrared radiation, the wavelength range responsible for solar heat gain, while allowing visible light to pass through with minimal reduction. Because the separation happens at the material level, the sheet remains transparent with a light green tint rather than becoming translucent or opaque as coated alternatives do.

Is the solar control property permanent?

Yes. Because the additive is part of the polymer resin and not a surface coating, solar control performance does not degrade over time. It is unaffected by weathering, scratching, on-site cutting, or cold forming. The 10-year warranty covers no reduction in solar and light transmission properties.

How much energy can LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet save?

Polyvantis energy modelling studies show potential savings of 25% to 40% in cooling and heating energy compared to standard polycarbonate glazing in temperature-controlled buildings. Actual savings depend on building design, climate, and HVAC system. Polyvantis provides a calculation tool for project-specific estimates, available through Kapoor Plastics.

What is the difference between the solid sheet and multiwall Solar Control IR variants?

The solid sheet (LEXAN EXELL D Solar Control IR) is used for architectural glazing, transport, and applications where a flat or cold-formed panel is required. The multiwall sheet (LEXAN THERMOCLEAR Solar Control IR) adds the thermal insulation of the multiwall structure on top of solar control, making it suitable for rooflights, conservatories, and covered structures where both heat gain and heat loss need to be managed.

Why is UV protection on both sides important?

Most polycarbonate sheets only carry UV protection on one side. If installed the wrong way around, the unprotected surface degrades under UV exposure, leading to yellowing and surface breakdown. Dual-sided UV protection on LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet eliminates this installation risk, which is particularly valuable on large or complex glazing projects where verifying panel orientation is difficult.

Can LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet be cold-formed or cut on site?

Yes. Both variants can be cold-formed and thermoformed using conventional methods, and cut with standard tools on site, without losing solar control, impact, or weathering properties.

What warranty does LEXAN™ Solar Control IR Sheet carry?

Both variants carry a 10-year limited warranty from Polyvantis covering reduction of light and solar transmission properties, yellowing, and breakage due to hail impact. Full warranty terms are available from Kapoor Plastics on request.
